Returning home from the well nearby, Kiran Devi carefully sets down a freshly-filled bucket of water. In one side of the courtyard, her husband carefully stretches and ties together vertical strings of cotton (TAANI) to create a new rug. Kiran Devi walks to the other side of the courtyard where a nearly-finished rug sits on the loom outside her house. Having sent her children to school and finished her other morning responsibilities, Kiran Devi sits down to weave the last few inches of the carpet in front of her.

Kiran Devi has been hand-weaving carpets for twenty years. She began learning from her parents in her hometown of Manoharpur in the Shahapura district of Rajasthan. Now living 8 kilometers away in Bidara, Kiran Devi continues to weave carpets to support her family. Used to weaving according to gridded designs, she found it challenging to create a design entirely on her own.
